Post op day #3 (Monday)
Watch out world, I accomplished a lot today. A shower! Whoosh, it drained me of any energy remaining but felt really good. I slept really great even with interruptions from staff, I found a comfortable position in the hospital bed that is just right. But I started our day off with feeling nauseous again and a headache. The staff (that includes Daxton of course) was so attentive and got me feeling better in no time.
Both Dr Trahan (the plastic surgeon) and Dr Ordoyne (surgical breast oncologist) came in at the same time. They both made me cry, they have their own personal stories as to why they do what they do. Dr. T’s mom has breast cancer and his dad died of a medication error. He has 3 children as well and takes what he does very seriously. He was able to do my reconstruction without any use of implants which is incredible! I’m not against implants, but preferred not to have them at this point in my journey if I didn’t need them! He had all the time in the world for us and really expressed his compassion for us. Dr. O is just a gentle guy all around. His wife had breast cancer just 5 years ago and he shared some very personal experiences about that. He said my mastectomy went well and so far the lymph node they biopsied was negative. He was thrilled with how the mastectomy went and was hopeful when results get here from the rest of the tissue. He said he has no doubts we did the right thing and that we weren’t one of his many thousands of patients that say “I wish I would have done this sooner.” I can’t tell you how reassuring that was. I know everyone’s journey is unique, but for us I’ve had to stay very in tune with God as he has obviously guided my family in every single way. If this surgery would have been at the regular date of April 22nd (that I booked back in October), it likely would have been canceled due to the coronavirus. I truly feel so blessed, like God knew all this from the beginning. I can hardly believe we did this, Dax and I. I’m so lucky to have him my partner for life. And check out that top bun he gave me. He is so sweet and the most loving man, I’m so thankful for all the patient ways he is helping and serving me.
After that it was time for discharge instructions which was very lengthy and a bit overwhelming. A new antibiotic, pain pills, nerve pills, muscle relaxer, anti inflammatory and just a lot to juggle. Luckily Dax could walk to Walgreens down the street and picked up my mobile pharmacy. I’m quite short of breath, still feel like an elephant is on my chest or my incision will rip with any movement. But standing up straight and walking and doing my breathing treatements and leg compressions and exercises are super important. So we definitely have our work cut out for us just to get the basics done, not to mention drain care every several hours emptying those suction pouches. Youch, can’t wait to get rid of those.
So thankful for the sweetest retired guy who volunteers his time as a shuttle driver to and from the Hope a lodge and the hospital. He just wanted to spend some of his days helping other and giving back to the community and this is what he chose and it made him so happy. I love that there are people like this in the world all around us. Be conscious about looking all around for good people each day, you’ll find them everywhere....just like those ants and spiders I was hallucinating about lol.
Anyway, here’s to another day behind us. Here’s to another day full of Gods love and miracles. My babies are doing amazing with Brittney, all of the kids activities have been canceled which I’m glad about and Brittney is keeping them safe and well.
Loves and sanitizer,
Alisa & Dax
